1) Llegiu el següent text i contesteu les preguntes.

“A great song is like a salad dressing: you need just the right amount of sweet, sour and salt to get it right and when you do you only notice the balance of flavours, not the ingredients” (fragment d’una entrevista a Edge, membre del grup musical U2)

a) Identifiqueu les metàfores i les comparacions del text.

b) Identifiqueu l’objecte, la imatge i el sentit de cada metàfora i de cada comparació.

c) Traduïu el text.

2) Traduïu les metàfores en cursiva (estàndard i lexicalitzades) mitjançant el procediment que cregueu adient.

a) The height of one’s career.

b) In the bowels of the ship.

c) A child needs room to grow.

d) His mind was caged by depression.

e) A blanket of snow fell through the night.

f) That is a hot curry.

g) I’m feeling blue.

h) My memory is a little cloudy.

i) She thundered into the room.

j) This joke is aging quickly.

k) They pulled strings to get things done.

l) It’s raining cats and dogs.

m) He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

n) She’s the apple of my eye.

3) Les paraules en cursiva tenen un significat metafòric (són metàfores estàndard). Traduïu-les. Llavors, expliqueu-ne el significat primari (no figurat) i contraposeu-lo amb el metafòric (figurat).

a) the growth of the economy

b) raising his voice above the cries of the opposition

c) we are all in the battlefield

4) Expliqueu tres possibles significats de “The graffiti artist put a throw-up on the wall”. Tingueu en compte que els significats poden ser tant literals com metafòrics.

5) Identifiqueu, expliqueu i traduïu les metàfores, comparacions, sinestèsies i personificacions del següent text, extret d’un anunci de colònia.

After the “after-hours” and into the morning. All is awash in heat and light. Two bodies dance upon a canvas of white. It glistens against the sea below them. It penetrates the air that surrounds them. For him. For her. It is a moment made magic by it. Senses awakened. They have never felt so tactile, so sensual...

For him: a fresh fragrance for him. A fresh breeze, simple and direct, vibrant, stimulating and energising. It epitomizes freshness.

His experience: 6am. The morning light is white. The ocean intensely blue. The air around us is energising, fresh, revitalising. Her skin is soft and fragrant. We are as vibrant as the light that transcends us. Pure and simple, my senses are redefined. Now I know what is essential.

For her: a fresh fragrance for her. A gentle breeze bathed in light, calm and yet incredibly fresh.

Her experience: A fresh white light fills the room with white. It bathes me in an energy that is as pure and primal as my sensations. It holds us in an eternal embrace. A gentle breeze passes over us in a whisper. Its fragrance is as invigorating as a new experience and as comforting as his touch.

6) Identifiqueu i expliqueu les metàfores del següent poema.

Dangerous pavements.
But I face the ice this year
With my father’s stick.
(Seamus Heaney, ‘I.I.87’, dins Seeing Things, p. 20).

7) Llegiu el següent poema i contesteu les preguntes.

a) Agrupeu per camps semàntics les metàfores i les comparacions.

b) Expliqueu breument la relació de les metàfores i de les comparacions amb el tema de la traducció.

John Keats, ‘On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer’ (1816)

Much have I travelled in the realms of gold,
   And many goodly states and kingdoms seen;
   Round many western islands have I been
Which bards in fealty to Apollo hold.
Oft of one wide expanse had I been told
   That deep-browed Homer ruled as his demesne;
   Yet did I never breathe its pure serene
Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold:
Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
   When a new planet swims into his ken;
Or like stout Cortez, when with eagle eyes

8) Tenint en compte les convencions formals de cada tipus de poema, traduïu el haikú de Heaney o el sonet de Keats conservant-ne les metàfores.
