The structure of the text: When paraphrasing, apart from changing the words we should also change the structure of the text, keeping the same meaning relations expressed in the original.

Example:

Besides being a theory about the basis and origin of knowledge and the contents of our minds in general, empiricism is also sometimes a methodology.

Paraphrase:

Not only is empiricism a theory about the basis and origin of knowledge and the contents of our minds in general, it is also sometimes a methodology.

What meaning relation is expressed in the original text and kept in the paraphrase?

Exercise: Firstly, pay attention to the words and expressions signalling cause/effect, generalisation, contrast, etc. Then, express the meaning relationships in the text in a different way changing the structure of the text. Then click the button and compare you answer with the possible paraphase.
