Preliminary steps:

To start writing a book review there are some preliminary mechanical steps one should take:

  • read the book with care , re-read if necessary.
  • note impressions and effective passages as you read.
  • shortly summarize the main plot elements.
  • ask yourself about the writer's purposes while you read.
  • allow yourself some time to assimilate what you have read.

Do not just read the book for pleasure. Do the reading with pen and paper at hand. You should bear in mind that the purpose of writing a review must be giving a clear, unambiguous advice on the book. Some critics point out that, in order to offer all the necessary information and make it easier for the reader to follow it, a review should be organized into four sections. "The ISCC classification"

I = Introduction

S= Summary

C= Critique

C =Conclusion

These four sections are interrelated among them. The introduction sets the topics and views to be discussed; the summary illustrates these topics; the critique expands on the opinion stated in the introduction with evidence from the summary; and the conclusion re-states and reinforces what has been said in the previous three sections.
