Gemma Barberà

I am a linguist interested in sign language formal semantics and pragmatics. My dissertation focuses on how spatial locations in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) are linked  to meaning and what exactly is their grammatical contribution. In a nutshell, it proposes an analysis of LSC locations in terms of specificity marking and also related to discourse structure.

In general, my research interests are centred on sign languages, formal pragmatics, semantics-pragmatics interface, discourse structure, and referentiality. I like combining elicitation with corpus linguistics, and I am also very interested in the combination between experimental and theoretical approaches to study natural languages. Research on sign language offers an amazing possibility to study the (non)similarities between the two language modalities, as well as to test the faculty of language across language modalities.
